CSIRO Field Trip

Field trip

In July 2011, the Year 3 group’s exploration of approaches and methods of scientific inquiry was enhanced by a field trip to a lab based workshop at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia’s national science agency.

At CSIRO, participants enjoyed an experiment with the DNA of barley and explored genetic modification of plants in their practical and ethical dimensions. The experiment was followed by a presentation and overview of genetic modification, the different uses of DNA proliferation and identification, structure, focusing on their work with barley. The participants were then given the chance to test multiple strands of DNA, with the objective of identifying the sequence of each sample which would be compared against the original.
